“ I used to travel in the North of England just for taking photos of the Lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus). I purchased one at Phytesia in 2013, and I can see 6 of them in my own garden. I look forward next Spring for new shoots. ”

Garden Orchids - get them in UK

Hardy Ground garden orchids are able to survive the snow and cold to greet you when everything melts. Get them within a week.

Our Hardy Ground orchids are born and bred in our Lab

Once you have ordered one of our Hardy Ground Orchids, example: Bletilla Striata garden orchid from Phytesia, you need to prepare the soil for planting. Before planting the rhizome, ensure that the soil that you will be working with is not too heavy, because heavy soil will not drain properly and can lead to rot and disease. If the soil is too heavy, mix in lava stone or a lighter humus-rich soil to aid in drainage and aeration. If you are planning to plant your orchid in a container, line the base of the pot with lava stone and use a light soil to plant in. Our orchids are excellent for both planting in the ground, and for container gardening to decorate a patio. Make sure, however, that the pots you choose are large enough so that new shoots have enough space to grow. Pots for your orchids should be no less than 30-40cm wide.

When your hardy ground orchid have finished for the season, normally in November, the stems can be cut to 5cm. If you live in an area where winter temperatures reach -20°C to -25°C, you should add mulch on top of the plants to protect them. If temperatures do not drop below -20°C, no protection for your orchids is required. While your garden orchids are dormant, make sure that you do not over water them, especially if you are growing in pots, as too much excess water is very harmful to the rhizomes.

All about Garden Ground Orchids

Orchids have a reputation of being a difficult plant to raise successfully, especially when it comes to overwintering them. It’s such a shame to lose a batch of garden orchids that you’ve painstakingly planted and cared for over a summer, but with Cypripedium Calceolus, you won’t have to worry about that any longer. Please visit for one of the world’s leading suppliers of Orchids and Accessories and feel free to buy a garden orchid we’ll deliver to your door within 10 days.

The ever-lovely Lady’s Slipper is a hardy ground orchid variety that’s native to areas that are much colder than most orchids can handle. They’re known to bloom in North America, Asia, and Europe – with some even growing in the frozen tundra of Alaska. This beautiful family of Orchids has been in use for various purposes – including medicine – as far back as 2,500 years ago. Some species’ roots are used as a sedative, and other species’ stems are used in soups and other cuisine. With many species nearing extinction, conservation efforts have been underway for some time in the hopes of returning the afflicted species to their native habitats.

Care and Planting of Garden Orchids Lady’s Slippers

One of the biggest benefits of bringing hardy lady’s slippers into your garden is that they don’t really need any preparation for winter. They’re able to survive the snow and cold to greet you when everything melts, so if you aren’t able to cover them in the winter, you’re not going to ruin them. You’re not missing out on any colour combinations, either: cypripedium calceolus comes in 47 beautiful varieties, which means there’s something for every taste. Cypripedium are happiest in soil that drains well and has very little organic matter. It’s recommended that the soil is aired, with at least 50% being a mineral substrate that will promote drainage. Lava stone is best, though yourgarden orchids will still thrive if you’re using sand, pouzzolane, or Argex. A mineral substrate is necessary to prevent the rhizomes of the Cypripedium from drying out – that’s the part that enables the orchid to come back in the winter – by retaining moisture during summer months. In the winter, they’ll help with drainage when moisture retention isn’t such a big deal. Place Cypripedium in a shaded or partially shaded area, avoiding direct sunlight, for best results.

Start looking for shoots in April once the snow has melted. The blooming season for many of these orchids extends from April to June, with the foliage disappearing at the end of summer as the plants prepare for winter rest. You will have some years where the garden orchids will decide not to flower at all – don’t panic! They’ll be back again next year. Once your orchids are established, they’ll gradually start to multiply as new shoots come up every year.
